 2012 BS
« Thread Started on Jan 1, 2012, 4:50am »

Firstly happy new year ! Hope you all had a good one and sitting here with my mouth feeling like a poxed up Badger crawled up inside it and died mine was a drunken one.

But I fear this year is one that is going to bring the real crazies out of the woodwork and we could find ourselves having to put up with all sorts of nonsense.

Already seen this article....

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-apocalypse-20120101,0,66615.story

And I am sure there is a whole lot more to come.

There's a guy here in Sedona I've mentioned before that believes on 12/21/2012 at 11:11 an interdimensional portal will open up over Bell Rock and if he doesn't jump into it, the world will end. This world is really just an alien construct. I saw him on the MSNBC 2012 program. We have a lot of people like that in Sedona.

I've heard of pretty big nutcases who live out in the deserts of Nevada and Arizona that are into all sorts of alien stuff. I will never know how these people come to these crazy conclusions, but I'm assuming it may have something to do with prolonged exposure to the sun or a peyote problem.

If I'm not mistaken, the Mayan calendar simply ends on that day in 2012. It doesn't mean the world ends. Just the calendar.

One could assume that an ancient, long extinct race of people would probably have a hard time updating a calendar. If I weren't around anymore, I would probably have a hard time keeping a calendar myself.

The Mayan calendar is the most accurate calendar in existence. It makes sense that it would begin again at some point, or need updating. What blows my mind is how such a 'primitive' civilisation did such a thing in the first place.

North and South America natives did a lot of amazing things, there is some ruins in south America carved from super hard rock with perfect angles. Look at the crystal skull a well, it's a piece of master stone working.

Yeah, there's a lot of "primitive" civilizations that did things we can't figure out - but only because we don't think like them. For every new thing we learn as a civilization, we forget something our ancestors knew.

For example, how did we make sure a site foundation was flat before we started using laser levels? Most of us will know this one - we used spirit levels. But how did we do it before spirit levels?
Some civilizations used a long piece of twine covered in chalk dust, everywhere that it stuck up from the general lay of the ground, that place was given more attention until the twine lay properly flat.

Why the chalk dust? So once you moved the twine you'd still know what part of the ground needed leveling. (You still see some bricklayers using this "primitive" technique to check if a wall is properly aligned.)
Before this, some cultures would dig a shallow trench and fill it with water, then they cut away the ground until it was level with the water.

After all that waffling, my point is, we have technology now to do all those things for us. So much tech that we have forgotten how our ancestors did the same things without technology.

Unfortunately, the great minds it took to develop this technology have made Ithe vast majority of people much more simple and reliant upon its being able to work in order to go through the motions of a regular day. In most developed nations, a week without a mobile phone can be crippling. To some, inability to access the internet could mean no pay - or worse, no search engine when they need to find out how to fix something or find directions. I do not necessarily find the feats of ancient cultures unique or particularly amazing, but as proof that the human mind is capable of shocking things when put to good use. Eventually, the idea of self reliance will catch on again. It may take some disturbing external factor for some to catch the clue (like it did for me) that being able to read a map or learning new skills is not necessarily just for people who fancy the outdoors.

I think ultimate self-reliance will resurface again when there is finally a giant CTRL+ALT+DEL that happens. Are we overdue for such a thing? I think so. Those who live through a complete collapse of society (not a nuclear attack, mind you, but it could apply), can rebuild a civilization, re-establish true self reliance and become a community that is stronger than ever.

Hmm, why not 12:12 or even 20:12? :)
