I hope to write a even better book than the postman!! But it's gonna be hard I think, I just wish someone would write a pa book in today's setting. Seems like all the pa books are all 20+ years old, and set with those culture base's.

There must be tons of PA books set around now. What kind of apocalypse are you thinking? There are tons of modern zombie or plague books, but you might be right that there aren't a lot of nuclear war books anymore.

I like nuclear wasteland books myself. Metro 2033 is gonna be really good when I finally get to read it.

I just started to read this book and I have read about 100 pages. So far, I think the book is excellent. Very happy with the setting, characters, and some of the back story on what caused the apocalypse. Will post again when I am done and share my thoughts on the overall book.

It's a great book, I wish there was one for his California trip.

A massive amount, Costner didn't follow the book barely at all.

Yeah, the part where he pretends to be a postman is about the only common thread between the two. The book skews more toward scifi, particularly at the end.
Definitely worth the read though.

Ah, I see. Thanks. I've read the book but not seen the movie yet. But costner was kind of my childhood hero (you know that one where his playing robin hood was a big favourite of mine) so I guess I'll like it automatically haha

I really liked this book... I'm a huge fan of David Brin... read some of his Sci-Fi books (Uplift War, etc)... and liked those too.
This was one of the first PA books I ever read (aside from the stand). Something about the main character being a PA postman appealed to me...
I agree the movie unfortunately strayed way too far from the book... IIRC in the book the postman was sort of a coward.. not wanting to fight and keeping moving in order to not get tied to one place.. while Costner made him into a 'anti hero' hero (antisocial--but still a hero).
While the movie annoyed me when it came out because of its variance from the book--I now like it (maybe because of the dirth of good PA movies... most are low budget B movies and some are just horribly campy and silly)... at least the Postman is decent filmography (is that a word?) and had a budget.
but I also can tolerate parts of waterworld.

Waterworld was horrible, I haven't been able to ever finish it.

I finished The Postman sometime last weekend. Definitely, without a doubt, one of my favorite PA novels. I understand what Megat0n was referring to when the heavier sci fi element kicks in at the end. But I didn't mind one bit. Fantastic read, would recommend to anyone who hasn't read the book yet.
I have just one question, what the hell was Costner thinking!?

Wife got me a Kindle for a graduation/birthday present. The first book I bought was The Postman. 41% of the way through (love that Kindle tracking thing) and I have to say I'm glad I saw the movie first.
I loved the movie and now I get to love the book without knowing the story. Tons of quotables in the book and I'm finding it very relevant to the attitudes of Americans today - the whole "I wish someone would take responsibility, I'd get behind them" thing is classic!
I'm not sure what to read after The Postman that'll keep me interested both in good writing and the philosophical themes. I'm also finding it hard to compare The Road and The Postman because they're such different stories. The Road is definitely more personal (having kids you read The Road in a much different way) but The Postman makes me want to wrap myself in a flag and dispense some justice.

I read a large chunk of The Postman on my Kindle while flying at 33K feet. I had an extra microbrew on that flight and felt like a king, by contrast.
It's one of my favorite PA books. Of course I'm a sucker for stories of ordinary people thrust into extraordinary circumstances. I also loved the whole "imposter" theme, and the humility and non-Rambo behavior.
