They seem to be more images of disasters than an apocalypse.

Yeah, Lori Nix's stuff is great. The cool thing is that those aren't digital paintings, they're actually real photographs of miniature model sets. I read an article that said that each one can take several months to set up.
The library one, http://www.lorinix.net/the_city/02.html, is the desktop on my work laptop right now.
