What are your thoughts? Is this the start? I only ask because (mostly as a joke) people are accepting it as so. Now me, personally, I don't find it any more the "start" of the zombie virus than any of these are. (Thanks, Silhouette, for the link.) I just feel the news played this one out once the stations began repeat coverage on it. The references are dying out a little more nowadays, but they are still apparent in the media. What are your thoughts about the event itself, Zombie culture notwithstanding?

Some kids I knew in college did 'bath salts' and never did anything this crazy. That being said, there's no guessing the outcome of a completely uncontrolled substance. I'm sure the entire gambit of the product's making and distribution is a shady thing. Until this happened, it's been available at smoke shops, liquor stores, and even some gas stations.

It strikes me that the man who did this terrible act is probably only a tad more delusional than those who think this might be the start of a 'Zombie' outbreak.
Perhaps, and I am bringing a chip on my shoulder to the table here, people need to realise that the Zombie genre is ultimately nothing more than just the very populisit manifestation of the post apoc genre and should be judged as such.
Zombie culture is the 'Justin Bieber' of the post-apoc world (actually thats a bit harsh now I come to think if it. All that 'Twilight' bullshit is more deserving of that label-Zombies are more like Madonna. Been around a while, had its moments but ultimately its just throw away pop music which has its time and place but not really worthy of serious consideration).
Can I be a tad to pretentious about this ? Oh yes. But people need to face facts. The threat of Zombies in terms of potential SHTF senarios is zero. Enjoyable fiction, yes but thats the total extent of it.

If this were Facebook, I'd "Like" the above. Eleventy million times if I could.

Again, and maybe I'm being the "neutral party" here, I agree with you on some points. I believe there's a VERY small chance of what would generally be accepted as a "zombie outbreak" to just HAPPEN overnight, and that the government would do NOTHING about it, but every apoc scenario that is possible should be considered as such.
Do I think machines will rise up and rule the world? No. Not even a little. But am I going to prepare, mentally for one? Of course. What would I do? How would I disable a robot? Etc, etc, for every other implausible scenario. I try to keep an open mind, I've seen children, no older than 12, carrying ak-47's and killing people to defend a few goats and a water well. I've been shot and had many limbs broken. I am world-weary enough to believe any contingency could be a reality. You go to Pakistan or North Africa or Pretty much any 3rd-world country, and your mind will be expanded a few degrees, and you'll come to realize a lot more than just what is on your TV screen is happening in the world.

I lost my own TV screen belief system 'cherry' back in Sarajevo in 1994 so I am fully with you on that but to even contemplate Zombies as anything more than just a figment of a very wild, and not without some enjoyment factor, imagination is really just plain daft.
There really is far far more chance of machines running wild given the advances in AI and thats got a whole lot more credibility than the dead suddenly starting to not only get up but being able to start eating people just for the sheer hell of it.
Dont get me wrong as somebody who is primarily interested in this whole Post-Apoc 'thang' from strictly a fictional basis I have a lot of love in my heart for Z-heads and the sheer volume of output, if not qualitiy, that comes from that part of the genre family is always worthy of admiration but in terms of any serious 'what if' discussion then its purely in the realms of pure fantasy and anything more than that and its really time to start being a bit wary.
Maybe this loon in the OP link did think of himself as a Zombie and you have that whole odd thing with Lycanthropy as well so the delusion is more than possible. But thats it. A serious and dangerous mental illness/affliction. Nothing more, nothing less.

I can't give credit to something that is as flimsy as the "cursed zombie" myth, or the "suddenly contagious" zombie. I'd give credit to something more along the lines of a "28-days-later-zombie" or a world war Z zombie, since the viruses and actions of the zombies have some kind of believable functionality. They don't simply consume brains for the sheer fun of it, in the 28-days versions, they're just trying to kill you for the sake of killing you, and have all the same attributes as humans. In world war Z and the survival guide (which goes into more detailed depth as to the viruses definition) wherein the virus develops in the brain over something like 24 full hours and the host dies before zombification. I guess it kinda coincides with my "superflu" expectations, in the sense that if this does start the endall, I really hope I'm immune or a carrier so I don't have to worry about being turned VIA airways or some stupid broken needle on the ground.

A local high school got raided a few days ago. Cops found a locker full of the stuff. Unfortunately this news has made some people want to try the drug even more. Talk about unintended consequences.
