 Dont dream its over.
« Thread Started on Nov 29, 2010, 5:35pm »

This is the first part of a project that I worked on for a couple of years. It started off as an exercise in just getting me to write every day but it took on a life of its own and actually extends to a further 5 parts.

I have posted it up on a couple of other websites so its not new but I hope people enjoy it.

Well done, Matov. The journal structure works well here, and the writing is tight and clean.

I've made it to the bookstore and had myself a cup of tea.

Shall read on.

Wow, somehow I totally missed this last year. I had no idea you were writing something. So is there a story arc in there or is it just a continuous diary? I mean if I wanted to read a part that has a bit of a conclusion where should I stop?

Sitting here smiling at your use of 'story arc'. Its something I need to work on.

I started writing this whole thing purely an exercise to get me into the habit of trying to write every day and just started off with the idea of a pandemic survivor (and somebody not neccessarily the best equippoed in terms of ablitilies or attitude) making a decision to spend the rest of his life in a more welcoming climate than we get here in the UK. I had zero idea where it would lead and the only notion I had was that it was all about the journey rather than any sort of conventional plot with a beginning, middle and end.

So it just drifts and beyond an idea of the characters ultimate destination I really did not have a clue.

I have, I like to think, got each part with at least some sort of conclusion to all that has happened but I would never claim that it really has any sort of obvious direction.

If there is any theme, and its only just occured to me, then its all about how if we want to make God laugh then tell him our plans.

I just hope people enjoy it. I got a lot from writing it and found myself rather surprised at how some situations and characters worked out.

Any more forays into creative writing will have a bit more discipline because I can see that this is what a paying audience quite rightly desire but in terms of this, well I like to think of it as my own clumsy homage to the Pandemic part of the post apoc genre.

Massive apologies. Made a big error in uploading the second part and it was only half complete.

This is the full version....

I can tell you that as a fellow writer, I am enjoying it already, and I'm only on the 3rd day. Very well written, but needs some editing. I found 'that I have become do indifferent too.' which I assume is 'so indifferent to.' Don't feel bad - I found that I had spelled plum plumb accidentally in my ms today - editing is the worst part of it! Altogether I am looking forward to this story. I have one I started in one of my notebooks but need to get it into electronic media. I wish I could share a little here but I don't think my agent would like it. I may still do it, but who likes a tease anyway?

ETA: I stayed up in order to read Pt1 and loved it. A few minor spelling errors but very evocative and realistic. You should make it a full-length book, or perhaps a story in a series of shorts. Excellent work!

To echo Morg, some light editing is about all you need and you're on your way to making something great. Because this all goes off of journal entries and doesn't actually follow the character's actions, I think it will allow the reader to wonder a bit about what was not recorded, or what the character's thoughts may have been like throughout his journey. One thing I've always been careful to include in almost all of my writing is not necessarily the content of the article in question itself, but what is not included that allows the imagination of the audience to wander.

Great stuff, so far. I have read a few other stories styled like this, and as far as I'm concerned this is one of the better ones. Thanks for providing me with a next good read. I cut myself off after the 'May 24th' Entry, but I'll be sure to come back to it after I finish reading this book I'm occupied with.

Thanks for the feed back.

In my typical disorganised style I have actually 'edited' the part 1 to some extent but failed to replace it on here, just leaving the blog version up.

So apologies, here is the first part in word form.

I'm not done with Pt2 yet, but enjoying it. Just haven't had any time lately.

You don't need a Kindle - it'll run in Word. I finished Pt2 - where's Pt 3? (wink)

Is it odd that every time I read the title I think of Pink Floyd's 'Waiting for the Worms' or 'Goodbye Cruel World'?

;D

Its actually the title of a song by a New Zealand band called Crowded house and was in the TV adaptation of 'The Stand'. Always liked it...
