I was wondering if any of you have included books in your bug out bags? Survival tips? Any Ewell Gibbons fans? An atlas? Maybe even something for enjoyment?

My Get Home Bag in the car has a road atlas that covers much of the Midwest, due to the amount of traveling I do for work. I also have a couple of paperback novels in the car in case I end up stranded and long for something to do. Having a good guide to edible plants as well as general survival info is a good idea as well.

I have a kindle, but I don't have any books yet. I am planning to build a "Wasteland Survival Guide" though.

I carry a journal, at least one survival manual, and leisure reading in any bag I pack. Though I've never had to use them during a catastrophe, I am sure a book did save my sanity. During the 2003 SoCal fires, I found that it was wise to keep things near my reach to relieve stress and provide a convenient distraction.

I have a journal as well, so I can take notes on areas that I go through. It could be very useful I think.

I think everyone should keep one. For anyone looking for reliable brands, I've provided some below.

It's not really for a bugout bag, but I always thought that in th event of a total collapse of civilization, it would be cool to grab the contents of Wikipedia. All of the article content only comes to less than 32 gigs currently, which would easily fit on an every day memory card.
Combine that with a smartphone, tablet or even a laptop, and a solar panel charger, and you'd be the knowledge resource of the wasteland for generations, or at least until the batteries stop holding a charge.

May the road gangs never meet you. May the wind be fallout-free. May the sun shine through the ashes, hot rain not fall on thee. And until we meet again, may no one hold your flesh in the palm of their hand. Post-Apocalyptic.com - Twitter.com/PostApoc_Blog |
