My new 1911 « Thread Started on Nov 29, 2011, 11:19am »
I don't know if I can really call it 'new' since the frame was built by Remington Rand in 1945, but here it is. I picked it up a couple weeks ago, but have had no time to shoot it or even pick up ammo, so it's at my BOL right now.
Anyway, it was built/tuned by an armorer at Ft. Benning for the AMU (Army Marksmanship Unit) to compete at Camp Perry. Or rather, it was built to those specs - we're not sure. If you google 'Cap Perry 1911' you should find similiar looking pics. My best friend sent me a flat mainspring housing and a Remington Rand slide to make it more original, but I need to find a barrel and link and have it fitted.
It currently wears a Colt National Match slide, and the frontstrap is checkered nicely - the trigger is nothing short of amazing. It's the best trigger on ANY gun I've ever had. I can't wait to shoot this thing. I have more pics, but I don't want to brag too hard...
Anyway, the 1911 isn't perfect - it's heavy as hell for one thing, as is the ammo, but damn if it doesn't give a guy confidence in his survival. (I'd feel better if I had ammo for it...which is on the way.)

That's cool. I've been thinking I'd like to get a 1911 myself recently. You think it would be a travesty to get one in 9mm? I'd like to have something a little different, and in a caliber that I already have to be able to save with bulk ammo purchases.
May the road gangs never meet you. May the wind be fallout-free. May the sun shine through the ashes, hot rain not fall on thee. And until we meet again, may no one hold your flesh in the palm of their hand.

Travesty? No, but I'd consider getting a Star BM instead - they come in 9mm, have the 1911 feel, and are good pistols. They used to go for around $199 but I haven't seen any in awhile. I would like a 1911 in .38 super someday. My 9mm is a SIG P6 - fantastic handgun, light, accurate, compact, with the same grip frame basically as a Walther P38 or P1. BTW, J&G sales had P1's for sale with two mags for $269 recently. Wish I'd bought one instead of the 933 upper I had just bought. (It will eventually become an SBR like this:)
I too understand limiting the calibers you have on hand - but I've given up. Currently I have weapons in .45 ACP, 9mm, 5.56x45, 7.62x54, .303 and .300 Savage, oh, and .30 carbine - I still have ammo in 7.62x39 (good trade mat'l) and 7.62x25 - as well as a box of 8mm. I had to pawn my SKS's awhile back, and had to make the decision to let them go and concentrate on AR's or get them back for an exorbinant sum. I chose the AR route, since I'm pretty well vested in the caliber. I also have a 12 gauge and a .22LR, but those don't really count because everyone should have at least one - right?

Nice morg, I plan to get a .40S&W hi-point when I turn 21. It's a great little gun for the price, and durable as hell. I will also get a tt-33 if I can get my hands on one as well.

Awesome, Morg. Good on you for getting your hands on that beast. I've always loved the 1911, and about the only reason I would not invest in one at the moment is price. Have you taken it to the range yet? If so, an AAR would be very cool.

Nope - haven't had time, but we're going to 40 hr weeks soon, so it'll happen soon. I'm going to invest in some decent .45 auto hardball reloads for it and shoot the snot out of it for awhile to get a feel for it. The nice thing about .45 ACP is you don't need any fancy JHP or defensive rounds for it - you hit someone with regular ball, they go down. Period. I would like to have the other slide fitted once I find another barrel, but I will likely leave it in this configuration although the rear sight could use some de-horning. This was built for matches, not combat, but is pretty similiar to the MEU SOCOM .45 the Marines use, if a little more traditional. Army/Camp Perry regs dictate that. I understand the armorers who built these also built .45's for Delta, so I'm guessing it should run just fine. The feed ramp is so slick it's amazing, and the trigger has NO creep. ABout 3.5# - everyone who pulls the trigger just says WOW. I'm really looking forward to killing some paper targets with this thing and reaquainting myself with the 1911 after so many years.

Nice one! Congrats!
I've got a tuned Model 70, and you've got me wanting to pull that slicked-up single action trigger a few hundred times. Let us know if you find a good deal on hardball, eh?

The good old 1911. I have all ways loved this weapon. And the 45cal is a lovely round. Personally I would not have one has part of my gear. It is has mentioned heavy and I want to save weight to allow me to carry more 5.56mm ammo. But for a before SHTF EDC it is a good choice. Use it to get home or to you BOL switch to a 9mm and rifle. Keep at the BOL has a spare.

Well, I am using a SIG P6 for my 'get home to BOL' sidearm just for that reason. The 1911 sits at home in my antique 1700's vintage 'money box' - wish I had some money for it to guard...
The 1911 is one of those weapons everyone should own at least once. It will be used for HD at the BOL, and in that role excells. As I mentioned in other posts, I have a collapsible stock M1 carbine that is also very light, to help me fight my way home to my AR15's. That may change at some point, but I think it's still a good choice. Fast and light to get you to your BOL, then it doesn't matter.

Watch the hammerbite. Those old gov hammers and beaver tails will put the pinch on ya less ya have little girly hands.
Been in love with 1911s since I was issued my first, and haven't been comfortable shooting anything since. Different things work for different people, but the weight of the gun make the recoil more than manageable for anyone strong enough to hold it, and the ergonomics work for me. From three to fifteen yards all I have to do is draw and point, and its COM every time.
If you're into reloading check into casting your own. Saves ya a ton in the long run, even rolling your own is getting expensive now a days.

I went ahead and bought a stainless Springfield Armory 1911 in 9mm last week. It was on consignment at my local shop, but had never been fired, so I saved a few bucks on it. I'm in the middle of my 14 day waiting period, but I'll post a pic of it when I get it next week.

Fourteen days? Damn man, I'm sorry. Granted, NC aint perfect. Ya still have to take a class and get a permit to carry concealed, but we have constitutional open carry here and it only takes three to five days to get your purchase permit back from the Sheriff's office. After that, no waiting period, and ya can get up to five permits at a time (each permit is only good for one pistol. No wait on long arms.
If anyone is hunting for an affordable, reliable 1911 let me recommend RIA. Before I bought one from an FFL buddy of mine in NM I carried Kimbers and Charles Dalys on a daily basis. Once I bought that first RIA I put my high dollar guns in the safe. It functions flawlessly and eats anything I feed it. My wife stole my first RIA so I went out and picked up another. The newest incarnation of the RIA is even better than the first with a match grade barrel, ambidextrous safety, extended beaver tail, skeletonized hammer and trigger, and better sites. For a price under six hundred.
The first one I bought, I picked up for about five hundred, popped out the blade sights, threw in three white dots, did a trigger job on it, replaced the gov style hammer and beaver tail and threw new grips on it for less than a hundred bucks.
It now has round about eight thousand rounds through it, and the only issue I ever had was with mags wearing out. HC lead, SWC, FN, FMJ, JHP, it doesnt care. It eats it all.
The only complaint I have is with those dammed smooth grips. They aren't hard to hold or anything, but I do greatly prefer checkered grips.

I was thinking about getting a RIA 1911 because of the price, lately though I have been looking at the sr40 Ruger. Will the RIA take standard 1911 mags? Seems like one of my local gunstores always has a helmet full of 1911 magazines.

Waiting period? What's a waiting period? LOL. Nice looking lady you got there kegan. Yeah, hammer bite is a bitch. I've got a semi-beavertail - doesn't even look like a beavertail safety, but I hesitate to have it fitted because the gun is so nice. It was tuned, as I said by an Army armorer for the AMU. You can see yourself in the damn feedramp and the trigger is phenomenal. I just wish I had time to go shoot it. Working 60 hours a week leaves nada for fun. Have to get in the attic today and do some electrical. As an electrician, on my day off this is about the last damn thing I want to do, but it needs to get done. At least some of it.
