Just now I am reading Swan Song. Half way through it and I would recommend it to whoever has not read it yet. Similar to The Stand but I think it is better. Well, better until now.

I think my next book would be Year Zero by Jeff Long.

Zone One by Colson Whitehead got a good write up in - of all places - Parade magazine this morning. They've called it the "thinking mans" zombie novel. I'll see if I can find it at the store tomorrow and report back.

Im really picky with the books/ manga I read. But the below are my favorites.

1. Hell Gate London (all 3 books)
2. High School of the Dead (manga)
3. Y: The Last Man

Did you start reading it yet?, How is it?, A lot of people recommend it to me. But I have not been able to find it, in local book stores. I know, I know I can get it thru amazon. (just to lazy to order it)

I've just finished listening to the audiobook of 'Earth Abides'. What shocked me is that I've neither read it, nor really been aware of it before now, spent the first half thinking it set quite recently (written over 60 years ago)

I bought this on my Kindle, but haven't started it yet. I'm curious to see what you think of it.

I'm about to start a book that may or may not be post-apocalyptic, I'm not sure yet.

Hull Zero Three by Greg Bear

"A starship hurtles through the emptiness of space. Its destination-unknown. Its purpose-a mystery.

Now, one man wakes up. Ripped from a dream of a new home-a new planet and the woman he was meant to love in his arms-he finds himself wet, naked, and freezing to death. The dark halls are full of monsters but trusting other survivors he meets might be the greater danger.

All he has are questions-- Who is he? Where are they going? What happened to the dream of a new life? What happened to Hull 03?

All will be answered, if he can survive the ship."

I like those generation ship stories in general, and they usually have a PA bent to them as well.

I just started to read Robert Heinlein's 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'. My cousin recommended it to me when we were discussing politics. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a post-apocalyptic novel. From what little of the synopsis I read, the story follows a lunar colony's revolt against the Earth. Should be an interesting read; Heinlein's never let me down before.

the few Heinlein book books I've read came across as quite dated in many aspects. Starship Troopers came across as propaganda for the military and Farnham's Freehold, while being a PA novel, and quite popular among survivalists, is really racist.

Heinlein passed away over two decades ago. Most of his work was written during the middle of the last century. I think that should provide some explanation.

Heinleins "Tunnel in the Sky" was a favorite of mine. Esp when the older sister tells her brother not to bother taking a weapon on the test { other than his two knives} and that the point is to survive - not kill any creature he runs into.

I've been reading Beyond Exile by j.l. bourne, the sequel to day by day armageddon. It's as good as the first book. I've only been reading it on the treadmill at the gym, needless to say all i want to do is my cardio.

Just finished reading Larry Correia's Monster Hunter Vendetta yesterday. It's a decent 'monsters are going to destroy us' apocalyptic tale but it I didn't like it as much as the 1st book in the series (Monster Hunter International).
I think he was trying too damned hard to make it "cool" e.g. he uses a lot of pop-culture references that just weren't necessary because it's a decent story on its own without trying to tap into every internet meme there's ever been.

I'm holding out some hope that the third book (Monster Hunter Alpha) gets back to the writing style of the first book. I'm giving the guy a second chance with an unrelated book he has co-authored with Mike Kupari. The book's called Dead Six and has so far proved to be a good yarn. It'll hold me over until I can get a copy of Monster Hunter Alpha.

I'm a huge PKD fan, and his works have not dated as badly as Heinlein's :)

I'm currently reading The Penal Colony by Richard Herley. It was published in 1989, but is now free to download from Amazon. Great little action/thriller about a man that is sentenced to life imprisonment on a prison island 40km off the UK coast.
