 A bit overdue...
« Thread Started on Nov 12, 2011, 5:04am »

To the United States, United Kingdom, and Commonwealth Nations, the eleventh day of November is one dear and close to our hearts. Everyone knows one, and most families have at least one. Our neighbors and allies in the Commonwealth put this day aside as one to remember the glorious dead, along with the end of the Great War. I take pride in knowing that we are cut from the same cloth as Great Britain and her former colonies. I also take pride in being able to celebrate the person whose choices to defend the nation, which have become increasingly misunderstood by the general public. To Americans; I hope you thanked a warrior today. To our neighbors and allies across both oceans, especially those who have lost loved ones who took up arms for their country, I hope that your Remembrance Day was one of tranquility.

To those from nations that observe different days for their war dead and veterans, or who happen to come from nations that once fought the aforementioned, I do not mean to offend. War is an ugly, but necessary beast. But it does not prevent us from finding commonality. It is on days like these that we learn to appreciate one another's traditions and heritage, and by making that exchange we offer the same in return.

To all veterans, you have my humblest of thanks.

Amen to that.

Having lost a great-great parent in WW1 and a grand-father who died of injuries he sustained in WW2 along with other family losses from the bombing of London in WW2 as well then its always a day for reflection for me and my family.

But I also have German friends who lost family as well. They certainly never claim that they died in the service of any great cause but they never really had much choice and its all an accident of birth when it comes down to it so I always try to spare a thought for them as well.

And we are still taking losses in Afghanistan but I question whether those lives are truly being sacrificed for a greater good but this is not the time nor the place for that debate.
